Event Description

Road Race and Time Trials through Bushy Park

A Very Special Summer

There will be a sensational atmosphere in Bushy Park this summer during the Games. We’ll be welcoming people from across the globe to enjoy the excitement and the Park will be extremely busy on competition days.

The Cycling Road Races take place over the weekend of 28/29 July. The men’s race on Saturday starts at 10am on The Mall and is expected at Teddington Gate of Bushy Park at approximately 10.30am

The women’s race on Sunday leaves the Mall at midday and arrives at Teddington Gate around 12.30pm. Both races pass along Chestnut Avenue.

On Wednesday 1st August the Cycling Time Trial event takes place. Both the men’s and women’s time trials will begin at Hampton Court and cyclists will set off at 90 second intervals. The men’s Time Trial will take in Bushy Park along the route – one kilometre from the finish line. They will enter Bushy Park through the Teddington Gate, along Chestnut Avenue before finishing at Hampton Court. The event starts at 2.15pm and runs through to approximately 4pm.

To protect the safety of spectators and cyclists, dogs must be kept on leads in Bushy Park on all competition days.

Getting to the Park

All roads in Bushy Park will be closed to vehicles on competition days. These closures will apply from 9pm on Friday 27 July until 7am on Monday 30 July for the Cycling Road Race. They will also be in place from 9pm on Tuesday 31 July until 6.30am on Thursday 2 August for the Cycling Time Trial.

Many roads in the surrounding area will also be closed and the best way to get to Bushy Park will be via public transport. South West Trains will run normal services to and from Teddington, Hampton Court and Hampton Wick. Local bus services will be revised and some suspended temporarily. Routes 111 and 216 will be diverted via Hampton High Street, Hampton Hill and terminate at Hampton Road/Gloucester Road in Teddington. Route 281 will also turn round at Hampton Road/Gloucester Road and not serve Teddington Town centre, etc.  R70s run between Hanworth and Fulwell Garage only. Route 285 will be diverted to start and finish at Fulwell Garage. The X26 will not run via Teddington.  Services on routes 33, 411, R68 will be suspended until the roads re-open.

Good access points to Bushy Park by bus are the Dukes Head Passage (111 and 216), Hampton Hill and New Hampton Hill Gates (111, 216, 285 and R70), Laurel Road and Blandford Road Gates (111, 216 and 281).

On Wednesday 1st August routes 111 and 216 will be diverted via Hampton High Street, Hampton Hill and terminate at Hampton Road/Gloucester Road. Route 285 will be diverted to start and finish at Fulwell Garage and R68s will run between Richmond and Twickenham (The Albany). Routes 33 and 411 will be suspended until after the Time Trials.

A very special summer

Annie Murray, Chair of the Friends of Bushy and Home Parks said. “Excitement is running high. We will be welcoming around 30,000 visitors to the cycle events. Plans are in place for 35 of our members to act as ambassadors and help people to find their way around and to ensure they enjoy the day. It's a wonderful opportunity to share with people the stunning natural beauty of these unique parklands.”

Hello Jill,

I've been working with TfL. London United, LOCOG and Royal Parks on this.

On Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday 111s and 216s will be diverted. Towards Teddington, they turn left at the end of Station Road Hampton into High Street, go past The Jolly Coopers, the swimming pool and on into Hampton Hill High Street, right into Hampton Road where they'll terminate at the inter-section with Gloucesrer Road, turn round and return the same way. They go back to normal at approx 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday and 20:30 on Wednesday. The R68s don't run at all during these times. There are no buses along Hampton Court Road at all.

TfL have put all the diversion signs up already. The driver needs to look at TfL London Buses Notice of Event Notices EP12/000!

I hope that this helps - we ran a double page centre spread in the R&TT last Friday.
