I have just read on the above site an account of the Spitfire that crashed in Hampton in 1944. I remember the incident well and to my knowledge their discription of what happened is inaccurate. Is there anybody who can confirm my recollection of the event? Throughout the war my family lived in Oldfield Road. I was in the back garden when I heard a very loud bang, I looked over towards the railway station and saw a white parachute drifting parallel to the station. I called my mother and she too saw the parachute. Now, I have to rely on local gossip, at the time. The pilot landed in the Ormonds, much to the alarm of the residents who, as he spoke broken English, thought he must be German. Two police officers arived from the police station and some soldiers from the Water Works and escorted the pilot away. It turned out that the pilot was polish. My friend told me, a part of the spitfire landed in Lindon Road. I can only assume the rest of the plane crashed in the nursery, which was on the west side of Ripley Road. Can anybody remember? Hope some new, decisive information turns up Bryan. It would be good to know, but I am sure you were not dreaming!

Futher to my post regarding the spitfire I have spoken to fellow club members about the spitfire. Some of the older members recalled two hurricanes crashing at Kempton park:

 

Hurricane I P3931 (WX-V) F/O P Carter KAS Patrol. Abandoned at low altitude near Kempton Park racecourse. Pilot killed while bailing out
           

Hurricane I P3930 (WX-X) P/O Borowski KAS Patrol. Crashed on Kempton Park racecourse on return in
bad  weather after hitting a barrage balloon line.

Both crashes happened on the 18th october 1940. Both pilots were killed one who bailed out and one who crashed with the plane. It appears P3930 hit a barrage ballon and lost its wing. It might explain part of an aircraft coming down in lindon road as the plane itself crashed behind the trees at the Lindon road end of Kempton park.

Might be nothing of course as the dates of course are some four years apart.

My Mum's recollection was "it was one of ours and it was small" was she believes from 1941/42, bearing in mind a Spitfire and Hurricane, especially when damaged, may have looked very similar to her and the crash site being at the back of Hall & Hall adjacent to Kempton Park

Thank you everybody for all your suggestions. I do not know the date, from all those years ago, when I heard the loud bang or explosion and saw the parachute. Clearly, it could have been any one of the three war planes that crashed in Hampton or Kempton Park. However, the mystery is still unsolved. That is, who was on the end of that parachute?!!! Regards. Bryan.

Yesterday I posted Bryan's RTTimes letter to an aviation historians' forum. First response, from Ioannis Mylonas in Greece, was simply confirmation of the forced landing of Spitfire AB784. Second, and perhaps now, final and significant response was as follows: At 20:47 16/02/2013, Alan Smith wrote:

I agree with Ioannis that it was AB784.
I wonder if the other Spitfire seen by you [sic] was X4924 of 61 OTU which broke up in cloud and abandoned on 19.8.41 which crashed near Hampton  The pilot being Sgt WJ Parlee .
This is the only other Spitfire I can trace which crashed in or near Hampton.

i lived in priory rd my mum work at hall&hall. I remember my mum saw a crash in the reck at the back of our house where for years there was a great big hole so i hope i have helped a bit

Thank you everybody for your interest and your suggestions. However, two questions still remain. Who were the two ladies who rescued the pilot ? Was it Sergeant Jozef Sanislau Zalenski or Sergeant WJ Parlee who landed in Ormond Drive. The Jury is still out !!! Bryan. 

y a bang es i rember it very well, i was 12 at the time,we were playing in the road in priory road ,when we heard abang up in the sky,did not take much notice.My mother was coming home from work,she worked in sunbury,she was on her bike cycling through the  lanes, a minute earlier there was a crash in the didch,it was part of the plane, she got home and told us all about it,so we rushed there to see it we thought it was german,i brought a peice metal home,We lived near the railway arch.

The next thing we heard ,was a police man that lived near us by the name of mr busby,he told us he was running up ormond rd or drive trying to capture him which he did ,but he told us he was german ,and we all thought he was a hero,but now i know ,reading your letter he was polish. margaret

There is an entry on the Free Czechoslovak Air Force site about a spitfire that made a forced landing in Hampton, is this linked to the incident you talk about?

AB784 Vb Trans from 93 Sqn to 312 Sqn then to 504 Sqn then to 313 Sqn. This aircraft suffered from an engine failure on 31/01/44. and made a forced landing at Hampton. Middlesex.

Also in the history for the Windmill pub in Hamptonhill it says about a Wellington coming down.

 

Hampton Hill was hit a number of times during the Blitz, the first major incident was in
November 1940 when first 63 Park rd was gutted when an abandoned Wellington bomber crashed on it
