People can be so cruel

In front of everybody, a woman gets up

And offers me her seat

Made me think, when I had recovered my composure

To think

Was I was once so young

Running home from school each day

As football songs I sung

When cowboys at the Lido played

And nothing made feel afraid

Even jumping walls in old Step Lane

Which gave me bruises

But no pain

Or fighting often in the yard

For honour and it so to guard

Or holding hand out straight and true

On  ice blue morns

For caning due

Or riding in the rain too fast

For thrill

And meeting Morris Minor grille

And waking to  a sea of faces

Which disappeared when I showed traces

And being hale and hearty still

Why should I take such care now

When I took so little then

But I would not dare

To  try that ride again
